It's our people who make the difference
The history of Mitchell Group is a simple one. With £100 share capital and a £10,000 overdraft, the Company opened for business in February 1990 at Elf Oil’s newest and ‘state of the art’ petrol service station in Warrington. Mark and Anita Mitchell and founder colleague, Neil Crowden (now Group Director), developed three further locations over three years, purchasing the Company’s first freehold service station in Neston in 1993.
A keen interest in four wheel drive vehicles led to a focus on selling specialist vehicles during the mid 1990s. Personal recommendations and a sharp attention to detail ‘fuelled’ considerable growth which resulted in national recognition and an appointment to the Mitsubishi franchise in 1996. The newly-constructed Mitsubishi dealership in Eastham, Wirral marked a major step forward for the business and we went on to win the coveted Mitsubishi UK ‘Dealer of Year’ unusually in both 1999 and 2000.
A desire to acquire a premium brand prompted timely discussions with Lexus GB who made a swift appointment for the Chester and North Wales marketplace. In February 2001, we completed the UK’s biggest Lexus Centre and we opened on the Group’s newly-acquired five acre location at Cheshire Oaks.
Škoda joined the portfolio at the West Kirby, Wirral dealership in September 2001 and provided a unique opportunity to capitalise on the transformation of the Škoda brand under Volkswagen ownership.
Mazda was Mitchell Group’s final acquisition and shares our industry-leading facility with Škoda, adjacent to our Lexus Centre. This comprised a 16 car showroom and a 20 bay workshop operation along with the very latest in valeting and preparation services. The dealership was truly 21st century and provided the very best for both customers and team members with first class airport style lounges incorporating complimentary refreshments, television screens and private offices for customer use.
The consolidation of all our businesses to our strategic location has enabled us to focus all our attention on our values and culture. We remain at the forefront of automotive retail and after over 35-years in business, we are as convinced as ever that "it’s our people who make the difference".
In summary, the Mitchell Group team are immensely grateful for all that they have achieved. With dedicated teams of over 102 colleagues, we continue to retain our sharp focus on customer service. We remain a locally-owned business with Directors and Senior Managers meeting our customers on a daily basis. We are confident we can continue this
Naturally, over the most recent 20 years, we have experienced some ups and downs. We have been in places of sadness and faced times of ill health and occasionally sudden bereavement. Covid presented some very real challenges for us in terms of colleague wellbeing and welfare and commercially speaking, lack of new vehicle supply for extended periods.
Yet despite all of this, we are grateful for the inner strength of many colleagues and in some cases, driven by personal faith. Alongside this, we continue to enjoy first rate relationships with over 21,000 customers. We recognise a sense of stewardship, both financially and environmentally for all that has been entrusted to us. 10% of our annual profits are distributed each year to local, national and international projects which engage and inspire us.
